Private tuition

Tutoring with Ethan Green

An experienced tutor and mentor for students of History, Politics and English — at GCSE, A-Level and beyond.

A bright, tidy study desk with a notebook, fountain pen and typewriter

I had a love of learning instilled in me by dedicated teachers — and I am gracious to be given the opportunity to try and pass on that passion. My tutoring practice is built around what those teachers gave me: time, precision, and the conviction that every student is capable of more than they currently suppose.

The approach

Understanding before technique; technique before exam.

Lessons are conducted as conversations. We begin with a text, a problem or a past paper, and work outwards: what is the argument here, where does it falter, what would strengthen it? Exam technique — structure, timing, the careful handling of evidence — follows from genuine understanding, not the other way round. Students leave each session with a piece of written work to develop, and the next conversation begins from that.

My credentials with younger students are real, not advertised: I have judged national student debating competitions, returned to lecture at my old school, and been trusted with teenage debaters at the House of Lords. I expect a great deal of those I teach, and they tend to enjoy being expected of.
